| Paestum Paestum is an ancient Greek archeolgical site that was settled
about 300 B.C. It is on the shore about 20 miles south of Salerno and 20 west of
Gioi. The town of Gioi was founded by the original inhabitants of Paestum who fled
to the mountains to escape from raids by pirates. They used the natural virtually
inaccessible location afforded by the mountainous terrain and additionally built a
castle and fortress for additional protection.
